Eggleton Named WVIAC Defensive Player of the Year

PRINCETON, W.Va.)---West Virginia natives sweep the top WVIAC football honors for the first time since 1986, as league coaches have named West Liberty's Zach Amedro and West Virginia State's Andrew Eggleton as the conference's 2009 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year.  West Liberty's Roger Waialae was honored by his peers as the WVIAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Toppers to a 10-1 regular season mark and the conference championship.

Amedro, a Moundsville, WV native, has enjoyed a record-breaking campaign so far for the playoff-bound Hilltoppers.  The former John Marshall standout has established a NCAA Division II mark with 11 consecutive 300-yard passing games.  He leads the country with 41 touchdown passes, ranks second in passing offense (367.3 ypg) and is third in total offense (367.4 ypg).

The Harlon Hill Award regional finalist paces an offense that is on a WVIAC-record pace, scoring a Division II-best 45.1 points per game.  #9 West Liberty also leads the country in total offense (534.7 ypg) as Amedro has become only the fourth NCAA Division II player to ever pass for more than 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns in the same season.

The 6-0, 190-pound junior has been productive for the Toppers since transferring from Appalachian State.  Amedro needs only 230 yards in WL's November 21 playoff contest versus East Stroudsburg or Edinboro to become only the third quarterback in WVIAC history to reach the career 10,000-yard mark in passing yardage.

Eggleton, a senior from St. Albans, WV, leads the WVIAC with 109 tackles.  The 6-0, 215-pound linebacker enjoyed six contests in 2009 with 10 or more tackles, including a 22-tackle effort in a loss to West Virginia Wesleyan.  He also notched 16 stops versus Glenville State.

A two-time first team All-WVIAC pick, Eggleton also tops the conference with three forced fumbles and as many fumble recoveries.  He also contributed eight tackles for loss, three pass breakups, and an interception for the Jackets.

Waialae has taken the West Liberty to unprecedented heights during his fifth season at the Hilltopper helm.  WL is making their first trip to the NCAA playoffs and is the top seed in Super Region I.  The Toppers' current No. 9 national ranking also marks the first time for the program to crack the top ten as a Division II member.

The former quarterback at Dubuque (IA) College inherited a program in 2005 that finished 2-8 and was winless in league play during the prior season.  Under Waialae's leadership, the Toppers fashioned a 6-5 mark during his first campaign.  West Liberty followed with 7-4, 8-3, and 7-4 marks before this season's breakthrough.  Waialae owns a 38-17 career mark as a head coach.

West Liberty placed a league-high ten players, including seven offensive standouts, on the 30-person All-WVIAC first team that was selected by league head coaches.  Glenville State followed with five selections, while Charleston, Concord, Fairmont State, and Shepherd had three each.  West Virginia Wesleyan supplied a pair of players, while West Virginia State was represented by one.

Only six players are repeat selections from the 2008 first team all-conference squad.  West Liberty wideout Eddie Hills and Charleston quarterback DaRante Hunter return from the 2008 All-WVIAC first team offense.  Amedro earned first team status as a freshman in 2007.  Eggleton, West Liberty linebacker Nick Harding and Fairmont State linebacker Nate Black are the repeat selections on defense. Shepherd defensive back/kick returner Deante Steele is a back-to-back multi-position first team honoree.  Steele has a tied the career NCAA Division II record with 10 kick return scores heading into his senior season in 2010.
