Softball Sweeps West Virginia State In Doubleheader
February 18, 2012
Christie Wright's three-run homer and Robbin Kennedy's two-run double highlighted a seven-run second inning and Carly White tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as Mount Olive defeated West Virginia State 7-1 in game one of a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. All seven Trojan runs were scored with two outs. Mount Olive won the second game 3-0.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first inning of game one, Mount Olive (6-2) kept the bottom of the second alive as Kalie Smith was hit by a pitch with two outs and Kayla Voorhees drew a walk. Beth Overman followed with an opposite-field single to left and Smith scored from second to tie the game 1-1. Kennedy then drove a pitch opposite field to the right field fence to bring in both runners and give the Trojans their first lead at 3-1.
Katie Moore singled home Kennedy and Rebekah McDaniel drew a walk. Wright then sent a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence to cap the inning and give the Trojans a 7-1 lead. The home run was Wright's second of the season.
West Virginia State (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Kayla Sturms' two-out RBI-double. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases, but Wright got out of trouble on a pop out to Overman at first base. The Yellow Jackets also had the bases loaded with two outs in the second, but Carly White took over for Wright and ended the threat on a hard chopper that bounced off of Overman and into Moore's glove at second.
White (2-0) allowed only two hits, walking one and striking out one. White survived Mallory Hilton's one-out triple in the fourth, catching a line drive up the middle and inducing a groundout to second.
Mount Olive loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first when Voorhees was hit by a pitch and Overman and Kennedy both drew walks. But West Virginia State pitcher Kelsey Lorraine struck out the next three batters on just 11 pitches to get out of the jam. Jade Weinkauf (0-1) took over after Wright's home run and retired 13 of the 14 batters she faced in 4 1/3 hitless innings.
In the nightcap, pitchers Lauren Smith and Sara Pelegreen were locked in a duel resulting in just four total hits combined.
Without a hit, Mount Olive was able to push across an unearned run in the fourth. Katie Moore led off with a walk, took second on a passed ball, then scored when Kennedy's liner to center was misplayed. Kennedy later scored.
In the sixth, the Kennedy doubled to left for the Trojans' first hit of the game. Rebekah McDaniel followed with a single to center for an insurance run.
Smith allowed two hits, both to Brittany Hyatt, who slapped singles in the first and seventh innings. Smith finished with nine strikeouts.
Mount Olive's doubleheader vs. Catawba scheduled for Sunday has been postponed due to forecasts of rain. The twinbill have been rescheduled for March 6 at 2 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. The Trojans return to action Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at home against Francis Marion. Game time is 1 p.m.
