Golf Signs Capital Star

Derek Jordan from Charleston, WV has signed a letter of intent to play men's golf at West Virginia State. Jordan will come to WVSU from Capital High School in Charleston.
In 2008, Jordan qualified for the West Virginia State High School Championship as an individual.

Football to Play in Palmetto Classic
|
|
After a successful trip to the Chicago Football Classic last fall the Yellow Jackets have been invited to play in the 8th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic in Columbia, South Carolina this fall.
The opponent will be host school Benedict College.
There is a weeklong schedule of events including a golf tournament, Battle of teh Bands, a jazz concert, and a step show.
Game time is 4 p.m. on September 5th -- Saturday of Labor Day weekend.
The Yellow Jackets will be staying at the Ramada Inn, Columbia Northeast.

WVSU Golfer Humphrey Qualifies for WV Open
|
|
Garrett Humphrey a junior member of the men's golf team has qualified for the 2009 West Virginia Open to be held at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling June 24th through the 26th.
Humphrey qualified at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane, one of three regional qualifiers held throughout West Virginia.
The field in Wheeling will have the best amateurs and professionals from the state of West Virginia.

Softball Recruit Pelegreen Honored
|
|
It was announced this week that WVSU softball recruit Sara Pelegreen has been named the Ohio Division III softball Player of the Year.
Pelegreen (right) plays for Harrison Central High which is locat about 25 miles northwest of Wheeling.
The first team All-State player hit 355, had an earned run average of 0.57 with 194k's and 9 shutouts.

Baseball Wins Sportsmanship Award
|
PRINCETON, W.Va.)---The winners for the inaugural spring West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's team sportmanship awards have been selected. The award was proposed by the league's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) last summer and was selected by head coaches and game officials from each team sport.
West Virginia State (baseball) and Alderson-Broaddus (softball) claim the awards for the spring. Each program will be awarded with a traveling "WVIAC Sportsmanship Champion" banner to display for one year.
Both teams paired sportsmanslike actions with success on the field. West Virginia State claimed the WVIAC Southern Division title and finished with a 33-15 overall record. A-B finished 19-9 in league play to finish third in the WVIAC softball regular season.

Softball Recruit Named Morgantown Area Player of Year
|
|
Yellow Jacket softball recruit Rachel Colebanks of University High has been named the Morgantown Dominion Post's prep softball Player of the Year.
Colebanks played third base and pitched for the Hawks.
At third she committed only one error all season and at the plate Colebanks hit .362 and drove in 13 runs.

Jackets Ink South Charleston Baseball Star
|
|
In a busy day for the West Virginia State baseball program the Yellow Jackets also announced Tuesday the signing of South Charleston first baseman/pitcher Jack Hudson to a National Letter of Intent.
Hudson (left, courtesy of Charleston Gazette) hit a Kanawha Valley leading .534 this season while belting seven home runs and driving in 43 runners for the 16-9 Black Eagles.
On the mound Hudson put up a 5-3 record and struck out 55 in 41.2 innings pitched.
He was a 1st team All-State selection in 2008 when he hit .516 and also drove in 43 runs.

Baseball Signs St. Albans Star
|
|
The West Virginia State baseball program announces today the signing of St. Albans catcher Collin Southern to a National Letter of Intent.
Southern was a 1st team All-Mountain State Athletic Conference selection this season. He hit .483 with two home runs, 36 runs batted in, and legged out 14 doubles for the 16-13 Red Dragons.

Workman, Darby Receive More Honors
|
|
WVSU baseball players Eric Workman and Bo Darby have been selected to the National College Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Region 1st Team it was announced today.
Pitcher Ryme Holestine and designated hitter J.D. Broderick were 2nd team selections while third baseman Joey Jobst received Honorable Mention.

Baseball's Workman 2nd Team All-American
|
|
Yellow Jacket baseball player Eric Workman has been named to the Daktronis All-American 2nd team.
Workman, the WVIAC Player of the Year, tallied a league-high 62 runs as the
Yellow Jackets finished third in the Atlantic Region Tournament and won the
WVIAC Southern Division regular season crown. The Ivydale, WV senior
notched a team-best .458 batting average, slugged 11 homers, and drove in 48
runs.

Baseball Players Honored

|
Yellow Jacket baseball player Eric Workman has been named to the Daktronics Atlantic Region First Team, ABCA/Rawlings Atlantic Region First Team and the Rawlings Atlantic Region Gold Glove First Team as a centerfielder.
Shortstop Josh Bower joins Workman on the Gold Glove First Team while sophomore Bo Darby was also an ABCA/Rawlings Regional First Team selection.
Being honored on the Second Teams are Darby and J.D. Broderick by Daktronics and pitcher Ryne Holstine by ABCA/Rawlings.

|
WVIAC Player of the Year Eric Workman has been selected to the Daktronics All-Atlantic Region 1st Team.
The WVSU senior centerfield/pitcher hits .480 this season and put together a 6-1 pitching record.
Bo Darby and J.D. Broderick were selected to the 2nd Team.

Softball's Hyatt 2nd Team All-Region
|
|
The honors keep rolling in for WVSU freshman softball player Brittany Hyatt.
Already a 1st team All-WVIAC pick and conference Freshman of the Year Hyatt has now been named to the Daktronics NCAA Atlantic Region 2nd team.
Hyatt led the Yellow Jackets with a .450 batting average and 49 runs batted in. The Hagerstown, MD native blasted 33 extra-base hits, including nine home runs.

WVSU Finishes 3rd in President's Cup Race
|
|
The WVSU athletic program finished third in the WVIAC President's Cup standings for the 2008-09 school year the conference announced Tuesday.
The Presidents' Cup is awarded to the school that has the highest average scor e for sports sponsored within the WVIAC. Points are awarded based on finishes in the regular season of each sport. The number of schools participating for each championship also factors into the rating.
The Yellow Jackets won WVIAC championships in volleyball and basketball and had second place finishes in baseball and women's tennis.

Softball Signs All-State Catcher
|
|
WVSU softball coach Bob Allen announced the signing of Chapmanville All-State catcher Poppy Ramey to a National Letter of Intent.
This season, Ramey is hitting .304 with 13 RBI, five doubles, one triple, 17 stolen bases and three sacrifices.
She played a key role in the Tiger's 2007 state championship run.

Softball's Hyatt WVIAC Freshman of Year
|
|
Brittany Hyatt moved right into the starting lineup for the WVSU softball team as a freshman this season and was an immediate success.
The Hagerstown, Maryland native led the Yellow Jackets in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in while providing a steady glove at shortstop.
Her play caught the eyes of opposing coaches around the WVIAC as Hyatt has been selected as the conference Freshman of the Year.
Hyatt is also the Jackets' lone representative on the All-WVIAC first team.
Junior pitcher Diana Humphreys and freshman second baseman Kayla Sturms are second team picks while senior centerfielder Casey Jo Crawford received Honorable Mention.

Baseball's Workman WVIAC Player of the Year
|
|
West Virginia State dominated the All-WVIAC first team announced Wednesday night with five players being selected.
Leading the way is senior Eric Workman (right). The Clay County product was named WVIAC Player and Hitter of the Year.
A Yellow Jacket has now been named POY three of the last four seasons and four of the last eight.
Joining Workman on the first team are senior J.D. Broderick, junior Ryne Holstine, and sophomores Bo Darby and Joe Jobst.
Workman led the Southern Division champion Jackets in hitting with a .460 average and in runs scored with 51. He also had a 6-0 pitching record and a 1.80 earned run average.
He and Darby are repeated picks after being chosen for teh first team in 2008 also.
